Are You Suffering From Sleep Disordered Breathing?

Do you or a family member suffer from snoring or sleep apnoea, and it is keeping you awake and leaving you with disrupted sleep patterns? Well now you can undergo procedures to help this. Everyone knows somebody who snores, and yet it can be some amusement in the short term, it most likely can lead to serious implications.

Snoring is linked to sleep apnoea - a condition where you stop breathing for anywhere between a few seconds and a few minutes up to 30 times a night. People with sleep apnoea may experience repeated episodes where the muscles in the throat relax and cause a lack of breathing, resulting in low levels of oxygen.

The low level of oxygen causes a person to come out of deep sleep into a brief period of wakefulness, in order to restore their normal breathing. However after falling back asleep the chances are this will happen again a number of times before you actually want to wake up.

People who snore or have sleep apnoea are suffering from Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB). Surprisingly, more than 30% of adults and 10% of children experience SDB. SDB can become very stressful and upsetting not just for the person who has the condition but also the people close to them, and can cause broken sleep to people around you, so SDB does not just effect yourself.

It can lead to serious health conditions such as high blood pressure, strokes, heart attacks, male impotence and depression. Emotionally it can also lead to depression from lack of sleep and the stress and anger it causes knowing you cannot have a good night's sleep.

The treatments available at the first port of call are a dentist fitting an oral appliance to hold the tongue and keep connected soft tissues clear of the upper airway. But this may not be suitable for everyone and may not be the most effective way to cure your snoring, every single person is different and reacts in differing ways, therefore you should consult your dentist to discuss the best options available to yourself.
